How to get rid of ants in the house

An ant trail across the kitchen counter is a supply line, not the problem. The nest is somewhere else — in a wall cavity, under the floor tile bed, in a balcony planter or behind the window frame — and it keeps sending foragers out for as long as there is something worth carrying back.

That is why wiping the trail with a cleaning spray only clears the counter for a few hours. The scent trail is destroyed, the colony is untouched, and a new route appears the next morning.

The ants we are usually called for

  • Sugar or ghost ants — fine trails to sweet spills, honey jars and fruit
  • Pharaoh ants — tiny yellow-brown ants that split the nest when sprayed, so baiting is the only sensible option
  • Carpenter ants — larger black ants that nest inside damp or damaged wood rather than eating it
  • Fire and red ants — outdoor nesters in soil, planters and paving joints that bite when disturbed

Where the nest usually is

  • Gaps behind kitchen platforms, sink cabinets and tile skirting
  • Balcony planters, potted soil and the drainage gap under the pot
  • Window and door frame cavities, especially after monsoon damp
  • Wall cracks along a leaking pipe or an air-conditioner drain line
  • Under loose floor tiles, where the sand bed makes easy tunnelling

Why baiting beats spraying indoors

A residual spray kills foragers on contact and warns the rest. Some species, pharaoh ants in particular, respond by budding — the colony splits into several smaller nests and the problem spreads through the flat instead of ending.

A gel or liquid bait is carried home and shared with the brood and the queen through the colony's own feeding behaviour. It works slower, and that is the point: the workers have to survive long enough to distribute it. Expect heavier trailing for a day or two after baiting before the trails thin out.

What you can do yourself

  • Wipe trails with soapy water rather than a strong disinfectant so the bait stays attractive nearby
  • Store sugar, honey, jaggery and pet food in sealed containers
  • Rinse sweet residue off bottles and bins before they sit overnight
  • Fix the AC drain, dripping tap or damp patch that is holding the nest
  • Do not spray insecticide near bait placements — it drives the colony away from the bait

When to call for treatment

Call when trails return within a day of cleaning, when you find more than one entry route, when ants appear in bedrooms or bathrooms rather than just the kitchen, or when they bite. Those all point at an established nest inside the structure rather than a scouting party from the garden.

Frequently asked questions

Why do more ants appear after baiting?

Because the bait is working. Foragers recruit others to a good food source, so trailing increases for a day or two while the bait is carried back to the nest, then falls away.

Is ant treatment safe around a kitchen?

Yes when baits are used. Gel and liquid baits are placed as small dots inside cabinet corners and along trails rather than sprayed over open surfaces, so the kitchen stays usable the same day.

How long before the ants are gone?

Most indoor colonies quieten within one to two weeks of baiting. Large outdoor nests feeding the flat from a planter or paving joint need the outdoor source treated too, or the trail rebuilds.
